「文學是苦悶的象徵」這句話可說總結了所有文學產生的原因。

廚川白村從文學的創作、鑒賞、文藝的根本問題考察、起源層層評析，闡述文學乃是生命受了壓抑驅使作家創造出文藝作品。但這些作品是作家在何種心境下創造出來的呢？作品底下的角色是否多少投射了作家當時的心境？廚川白村曾經提出一個問題：作家之所描寫，必得是自己經驗過的嗎？他自答道，不必，因為他能夠體察。

本書是魯迅在北大、北師大、女師大授課的講義，1925年出版後一版再版，是文藝青年的入門讀物。在當時正是「五四」之後，文字表現即是民初的白話文。有一說：《苦悶的象徵》譯文所表現的熱情即魯迅在傳播自己的美學思想，也因此這本譯作被視為魯迅美學思想變化的重要線索。
